An Earthquake Rattled New Jersey: Did You Feel It?
On Sunday night, an earthquake shook New Jersey.
The 1.3-magnitude earthquake occurred approximately 5 km northeast of Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County at 9:04 p.m., according to the
United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS, which tracks earthquakes globally, claims that the earthquake occurred 8.4 kilometers underground.
Although they are typically not felt, earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or less can be detected with a seismograph. Although they only cause modest damage, events of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 are frequently felt.
There have been several recent reports of earthquakes in the Central and North Jersey region.
A 2.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded six kilometers from Whitehouse Station on January 30.
A 1.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded on October 20, 2025, around 2 kilometers east-northeast of Califon.
A 1.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded on August 12, 2025, six kilometers northeast of Lebanon.
A 2.7-magnitude earthquake with a center southwest of Hillsdale was recorded in Bergen County on August 5, 2025.
Because the East Coast of the United States is not situated on a tectonic plate boundary, earthquakes are less frequent there than they are on the west.
