Officials have chosen to postpone the yearly Special Olympics Seaside Heights Polar Bear Plunge as Ocean County works to recover from the two feet of snow that was delivered to the shore.
According to organizers, the dive that was originally scheduled for Saturday has been rescheduled for March 14.
The biggest Plunge in New Jersey is an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics of New Jersey that attracts 7,000 to 8,000 participants along with thousands of helpers and onlookers. Every year, it raises about $2.5 million to help athletes with special needs who compete in the Special Olympics.
According to the National Weather Service, the historic storm dumped at least 25 inches of snow on Ocean County, including Seaside Heights, where social media reports suggested the borough received at least 20 inches. Although estimations and potential effects had not been determined as of yet, weather forecasters have been keeping an eye on another storm that might bring more snow on Thursday.
The postponement was made to March 14 due to the overwhelming amount of snow that was received and the possibility of more snowfall, according to Kevin Burke, chair of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and the Seaside Heights Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics NJ. Everyone's top priority is public safety, according to Burke.
