Another Coastal Storm Approaches New Jersey: What to Expect

Now a powerful Category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Melissa is steadily moving toward Jamaica.

Parts of the island will be leveled by lethal flooding and catastrophic winds.

In addition to helping to divert Melissa away from the East Coast, a separate storm that is coming in from the northern plains will dive toward us and open a channel for tropical moisture to return to us. The rain will be beneficial.
From Wednesday evening until very early Friday morning, we may anticipate that rain gauges will accumulate one to three inches of water. The winds will also increase. With periodic gusts to 35–45 mph, sustained winds will be between 20 and 25 mph.

IMPLICATIONS: Regional floods. Rainwater will be pushed farther into streets by fall debris that clogs catch basins and sewers. Leaves and branches will be blown down by gusty winds. The leaves will make paved places extremely slick, aside from isolated outages. Please travel with utmost caution.
There will be a growing number of airport delays.

The forecast is for calm weather through late Wednesday evening. Clear skies are predicted, and the winds are light enough to allow for the formation of frost once more. According to Accuweather, advisories for frost are in effect until Tuesday at 9 a.m.

An early look at the outlook for Halloween: Before dawn, the rain should stop. The winds will persist. Anticipate extremely windy weather and prepare for the added chill such gusts will bring. Check Your Local Forecast.
