Avoid Answering Calls From These Area Codes
With each year that goes by, phone scammers get more sophisticated. They are aware that you are more likely to pick up a call from an unknown number that appears to be coming from a place you are familiar with. It's crucial that you don't fall for it because of this.
You should never accept a call from any area code in particular that you are not familiar with. Robocalling technology is sometimes used by con artists to phone wireless numbers and hang up after just one ring. It's known as the "one-ring" scam. The
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) claims that because these calls have a three-digit area code, it appears like they are coming from somewhere in the United States. However, they are not.
The Federal Trade Commission warns you to ignore calls from these 17 area codes:
- 216 (Cleveland, Ohio)
- 218 (Northern Minnesota)
- 268 (Antigua and Barbuda)
- 284 (British Virgin Islands)
- 347 (New York City)
- 332 (New York City)
- 469 (Dallas, Texas)
- 473 (Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique)
- 646 (Manhattan)
- 649 (Turks and Caicos Islands)
- 657 (La Palma, California)
- 712 (Western Iowa)
- 767 (Commonwealth of Dominica
- 809 (British Virgin Islands)
- 829 (Dominican Republic)
- 849 (Dominican Republic)
- 876 (Jamaica)
Any of these area codes could result in greater charges on your bill if you answer the phone. Typically, the "one-ring" trick is used to achieve this.
It's better to be safe than sorry. Don't answer the phone. If its genuinely important they will leave a voicemail.
Never return or answer any calls from unknown numbers.
Determine whether an international area code is present before dialing any unknown numbers.
Ask your local or wireless phone provider to disable outbound international calls on your line if you don't make international calls.
Be wary at all times, even if a number seems legitimate.
