Boardwalk Safety: Seaside Heights Considers New Restrictions Post-Violence
Ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday, Seaside Heights officials are considering new regulations to deter disruptive behavior on the beachfront after a violent and chaotic Memorial Day weekend that resulted in three stabbed persons and over 70 arrests.
An earlier boardwalk closure time was one of the recommendations that Mayor Anthony Vaz and council members considered during this week's borough council meeting.
One proposal being considered would require a shutdown on July 4 at 10 p.m. Similar limitations might be implemented for the next Memorial Day weekend and other holidays if passed.
Citing public safety concerns, officials also suggested that backpacks might be prohibited on the boardwalk. Diaper bags, medical equipment, and other necessities would be exempt. The intention is to stop children from carrying prohibited objects, such as concealed guns.
Stricter enforcement of short-term rental regulations, including possible changes to the required minimum penalty for infractions, was another subject covered. According to officials, the current policies might not be sufficient to prevent the massive, disorderly crowds that have become more frequent on summer weekends.
After examination and approval, the proposed ordinances may be formally adopted at the council's next meeting on June 18.
