Overnight Heist: Video Shows Thieves Push Charger Out of NJ Driveway

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A South Jersey family awoke early Saturday morning to discover their red 2019 Dodge Charger Daytona had been stolen from their driveway — a crime captured clearly on home surveillance video, and now under active police investigation.

The theft happened around 3:15 a.m. on Doe Court, according to Washington Township Police. Video shows two masked suspects approaching the high‑performance vehicle, with one suspect appearing to stand guard while armed with a handgun. The second suspect smashed the rear passenger window before the pair pushed the car out of the driveway.

Police say the suspects then moved the Charger across the street to the Hurffville Elementary School parking lot, where two other vehicles — believed to be stolen — were waiting. Only after distancing the car from the home did the suspects start the engine, likely to avoid alerting the homeowners.

The homeowner, who asked not to be identified, said the sight of an armed suspect was the most terrifying part.

“Had I come outside, there’s no telling what would’ve happened,” she told Action News.

The Charger — equipped with black wheels, tinted windows, a performance hood, and Daytona badging — is valued at over $100,000, according to Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik. He noted that Dodge Chargers remain one of the most targeted vehicles in the country, often stolen for resale, re‑VIN operations, or chop shops.

Investigators tracked the vehicle through license plate readers as it passed through the Five Points intersection and later crossed the Walt Whitman Bridge into Philadelphia minutes after the theft.

The homeowner immediately called 911 after noticing the car missing.

“I jumped out of bed and ran to my husband and said, ‘The car is gone!’” she said.

Police Urge Charger & High‑Performance Vehicle Owners to Take Extra Precautions

Authorities recommend:

  • Park inside a locked garage whenever possible
  • Use a steering wheel lock
  • Store key fobs away from doors/windows
  • Use a Faraday pouch to block signal‑boosting theft devices
  • Install additional GPS or immobilizer systems

These models continue to rank among the most stolen vehicles nationwide, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Washington Township Police Detective Matt Franchi at 856‑589‑0330 ext. 1143.
