A nasty combination of dangerous winter weather is ahead for New Jersey this weekend with the threat of snow squalls, wind gusts up to 60 mph and extreme cold with wind chills as low as 20 degrees below zero.

“There is a 40 to 70% chance of light snow beginning this evening and continuing through the overnight hours,” the National Weather Service said. “An arctic front may produce snow squalls early Saturday morning.”

While snowfall totals are likely to be limited to a coating to 1 inch, the squalls could cause brief periods of low visibility and quick accumulation on roads.
Forecasters warned that Saturday night's wind chill might be between 15 and 20 degrees below zero.

The weather service has issued unusual extreme cold warnings for all 21 counties in New Jersey, effective from 6 a.m. on Saturday until noon on Sunday in most regions of the state. In Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union counties, the extreme cold warnings are in effect from 10 a.m. on Saturday to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Additionally, high wind warnings or advisories have been issued for nearly the entire state. The more severe warnings are applicable to counties along the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay.

By Saturday morning, temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits and teens, with Saturday night lows potentially reaching as low as minus 5 degrees in northwestern areas.

Wind chills will create an even more hazardous environment, plummeting to between minus 10 and minus 20 on Saturday night.

The weather service has recommended that residents minimize time spent outdoors and take steps to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

Sunday will continue to be extremely cold, with temperatures only reaching the single digits; however, the winds are expected to gradually decrease. Check the latest forecast.
