Dangerous Rip Currents and High Surf are Expected to Impact the NJ Shore

According to the National Weather Service, Ernesto is now a hurricane just NW of Puerto Rico.

While Ernesto is expected to remain well offshore of our coast, dangerous rip currents and high surf are expected to impact the NJ Shore and DE Beaches as early as Friday and through this weekend.

The high surf could result in beach erosion. Coastal flooding is possible this weekend as well, especially along NJ and DE back bays.

What are rip currents?

  • Rip currents are channelized currents of water flowing away from shore at surf beaches.
  • Rip currents typically form at breaks in sandbars, and also near structures such as jetties and piers.
  • Rip currents are commonly found on all surf beaches, including Great Lakes beaches.
