New Video Shows Crash That Killed Uber Driver in South Jersey

WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. — Newly released surveillance and police dashcam video is shedding light on the violent crash that killed 42‑year‑old Uber driver Jose Martinez in Gloucester County.

The footage, released by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, shows a white vehicle speeding through a red light at the intersection of Red Bank and Hessian avenues on November 9. The car slams into Martinez’s vehicle with devastating force, killing him and injuring his passenger.

Authorities say the driver, identified as 24‑year‑old George Linard, fled from police moments before the crash. Officers had been responding to a report of two intoxicated men at a nearby convenience store. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, Linard allegedly accelerated away, crossed a double‑yellow line, and ran the red light seconds before impact.

Investigators later determined Linard is a British citizen in the U.S. illegally and was carrying a fake U.K. driver’s license under the name “Steve Hall.” He now faces a long list of charges, including aggravated manslaughter, eluding, death by auto, aggravated assault, and possession of a fraudulent government ID. A Gloucester County grand jury indicted him earlier this year.

Martinez, a Lindenwold resident, was working a routine Uber shift when the crash occurred. His passenger suffered a fractured leg but survived.
