This past weekend's dismal and stormy weather was more than just unpleasant. Beachgoers were put in risk since numerous swimmers needed to be rescued from choppy waters.

Hurricane Ernesto affected the area even though it did not directly touch New Jersey, leading to the forecasting of rip currents along the shore. The National Weather Service says that through Monday night, there is a possibility of rip currents.

6abc Action News reported that waves in Ventnor City were as high as five or six feet. According to the source, lifeguards there performed 17 rescues on Sunday.

According to Action News, there were at least five significant rescues in Ocean City, where beaches were closed on Sunday due to lightning and thunder.

According to Barnegat Light Volunteer Fire Company#1, two guys became caught on a jetty at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. The U.S. Coast Guard had a helicopter, and the fire department had jet skis in the water.

A Coast Guard sailor descended from the helicopter to save the two guys after a rescuer swam out to the rocks and assisted them in climbing the light post. Firefighters said that one suffered minor wounds and the other was unharmed.

Beachgoers are being advised by authorities to exercise caution in current conditions. Robust swimmers are not immune to rip currents. As of August 18, the National Weather Service reported that 33 persons had lost their lives in surf zones in the United States.

Rip currents were the cause of all but one of these fatalities.

Before leaving for the beach, officials advise you to carefully check the beach forecast and know what to do if you do get caught in a rip current.
