Angel Garcia-Rodriguez Age 26
According to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, Angel Garcia-Rodriguez, 26, of Lakewood, was charged on July 22, 2023 with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in a Death as well as Endangering an Injured Victim.
Officers from the Lakewood Township Police Department were called to the area of James Street on July 22, 2023, at around 2:25 a.m., in response to a report of a significant auto accident. When police arrived, they discovered that a 2007 Honda Civic had collided with a utility pole.
Officers found a seriously injured male victim in the passenger seat of the car and learned that the driver had fled the site of the collision. The injured man eventually passed away at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after being brought there.
According to a joint investigation by the Lakewood Township Police Department Detective Bureau and the Vehicular Homicide Unit of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, the Honda Civic was heading west on James Street when it lost steering control and collided with a utility pole on the passenger side door.
According to the inquiry, Garcia-Rodriguez was driving the car at the time of the collision and fled the area before police arrived. Eventually, Garcia-Rodriguez was discovered at a home in Lakewood and was safely taken into prison. He was then driven to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, New Jersey, where a court-approved blood sample was extracted. After that, Garcia-Rodriguez was taken to the Ocean County Detention Facility, where he is currently being held pending a detention hearing.
