Firefighters Battle Large Brush Fire in Ocean County

According to the Ocean County Sheriff's Office, they are assisting this evening from a sizable brush fire in the Pine Barrens west of Route 9, but no evacuations have been ordered as of yet.

The public was notified via a "urgent" text message alert by the sheriff's office that the wildfire was burning near the Garden State Parkway, which runs along the Berkeley-Beachwood municipal boundary.

According to New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the fire is named Fishers Pit Wildfire

At approximately 10:14 pm Monday, The New Jersey Forest Fire Service remains on scene of a wildfire burning in the area of Northern Blvd in Berkeley Twp, Ocean County.

When firefighters arrived on scene initial attack efforts were unsuccessful due to erratic fire behavior. Crews are currently prepping and strengthening fire lines and are using a backfire and burnout operation to contain the fire.
