Former Brick Mayor Joe Scarpelli, Who Founded SummerFest, Passes at 86

Joe Scarpelli, Former Mayor of Brick and SummerFest Creator, Passes Away

Former Brick Mayor Joe Scarpelli, Who Founded SummerFest, Passes at 86

Joseph C. Scarpelli, a 30-year+ public servant and 12-year mayor of Brick, has passed away, according to his family.

Joseph C. Scarpelli, affectionately known as Mayor Joe, Jersey Joe, and Poppy, of Brick Township, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born on November 18, 1939 in New York City, Joseph was the son of Joseph and Helen (Masucci) Scarpelli. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School before continuing his studies at Fordham University according to his obituary.
While working as a lifeguard during his summers at the shore in Long Branch, New Jersey, Joseph met Dorothy Montulet, the love of his life. After getting married in 1960, they had four kids. He spent his entire life as a devoted Catholic.

Joseph's dedication to his community and public service began shortly after he relocated to Brick Township in the 1960s. As a member of the Brick Township School Board, Township Council, and Mayor, he was deeply committed to the community and its citizens, serving in these capacities for almost thirty years. Mayor Joe launched Summerfest, a popular concert series that is still going strong today, in 1995. His leadership and commitment had a long-lasting effect on the community he loved.
While Joseph was proud of his years of service, his most cherished role was that of a grandfather. Poppy was his grandchildren’s biggest supporter, never missing a game, play, or concert, and treasuring every moment spent with them.

Jersey Joe was always the life of the party. He was a kid at heart who loved family above all else, model trains, Christmas, and PASTA! He loved to talk and made friends everywhere he went. He will be sorely missed.

No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to JBJ Soul Foundation at https://jbjsf.charityproud.org.
