Check Your Cabinets and Discard any Recall Affected Flour
Salmonella may be present in bagged flour sold in New Jersey and throughout the country, and health officials are asking consumers to throw away any contaminated goods.
Two-, five-, and ten-pound bags of Gold Medal Unbleached and Bleached All Purpose Flour are included in
General Mills' voluntary recall. The "better if used by" dates on the impacted bags are March 27 and March 28, 2024.
In a notification published on Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that Salmonella Infantis was found during product sampling. Officials declined to comment on whether contaminated flour had sickened anyone in New Jersey or other states.
The voluntary recall includes the following package UPC codes:
000-16000-19610
000-16000-19580
000-16000-10710
000-16000-10610
People shouldn't consume foods made with uncooked flour, according to the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the FDA, baking, frying, sautéing, or boiling foods produced with flour kills salmonella infantisis. "All surfaces, hands, and utensils should be properly cleaned after contact with flour or dough."
Customers are urged by General Mills to search their cabinets and discard any recalled flour. Contact General Mills Consumer Relations at
1-800-230-8103 if you were a customer who had to throw away products.
Children, the elderly, and others with compromised immune systems are at particular risk for serious and possibly deadly illnesses caused by the salmonella bacteria. Fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and blood in the urine or stool are typical symptoms of salmonella infection.
In a small percentage of cases, the infection spreads to the circulation and results in more serious conditions like endocarditis, arthritis, and arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms).
