Great White Shark Detected Near New Jersey Shoreline

According to OCEARCH's shark tracker, a huge white shark is skulking off the Jersey Shore.

The tracker reported that on Wednesday night, Scot, a 12-foot, 1,644-pound shark, was swimming several kilometers off the coast of Long Beach Island, close to the Hudson Canyon. He first showed up slightly north of that location on Tuesday night. As of Thursday morning, OCEARCH data showed that Scot had moved 214 miles in the last 72 hours.

A huge number of great white sharks are lurking off the coasts of New York, New Jersey, and Cape Cod, trackers of the creatures have said. A map on Ocearch's website allows members of the public to track the sharks for themselves, with each fish having its own name and fact file.

A shark hasn't been seen off the shore of New Jersey in a long time. These creatures are tracked and tagged by the shark research organization OCEARCH. When a shark fin "pings," it indicates that it came up out of the water long enough to send out a signal that lets scientists know where it is.

On September 8, 2021, Scot was initially tagged in Nova Scotia. OCEARCH reports that he has since swam 16,420 miles.

White sharks migrate to the U.S. southeast coast during the winter, spending time near North Carolina's Outer Banks, according to OCEARCH data.

This Western North Atlantic White Shark research is the world's most thorough research of white sharks, according to OCEARCH.
