Great White Shark Sighting: 11 Feet Long Off New Jersey Coast

Last week, researchers reported tracking an 11-foot white shark off the coast of Jersey Shore.

The male shark, weighing 761 pounds and named Dold, transmitted multiple signals off the New Jersey coast on June 19 and 20, before proceeding to swim north, as indicated by data from OCEARCH, a non-profit organization dedicated to shark conservation.

OCEARCH employs tagging methods to monitor sharks and subsequently releases them to study their migratory patterns and behaviors. When a shark like Dold sends a "ping," it signifies that its fins have breached the water's surface, enabling researchers to pinpoint its location.
Dold, named after Dr. Christopher Dold of SeaWorld, was first tagged by the organization on February 28, 2025. According to OCEARCH in a YouTube video, he is approximately 24 or 25 years old, placing him at the threshold of adulthood.
"Tagged 45 miles offshore close to the FL/GA border, Dold will yield vital information regarding the movements and behaviors of this crucial apex predator," stated OCEARCH.

The organization's studies have indicated that white sharks winter in the warm waters along the southeastern U.S. coast and migrate north during the summer to the coastal regions of New England and Canada.

You can monitor Dold and other sharks through OCEARCH's shark tracking system.
