A man from South Toms River has agreed to remain in custody while awaiting court proceedings related to the murder of his wife, as reported by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday.

Gustavo Juarez-Perez, 38, consented to his continued detention before Superior Court Judge David M. Fritch, according to Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

He faces charges including murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the death of his wife, Cheyanne Juarez, 30, which occurred on March 8 at their residence in South Toms River.

Juarez-Perez was apprehended on March 8 following a 911 call he made to report that Cheyanne Juarez was deceased and that he was responsible for her death, as stated in the probable cause affidavit.

During the incident, which originated from a dispute, his daughter and the couple's three sons took refuge in a separate bedroom, according to her account to the authorities. The disagreement intensified into a loud altercation, during which Cheyanne Juarez reportedly exclaimed, "it hurts" in Spanish.

Juarez-Perez informed a 911 dispatcher that he had assaulted and choked his wife. Authorities reported that they discovered Cheyanne Juarez unresponsive on the bedroom floor, with blood on her face and a belt around her neck.

In addition to facing a murder charge and being held at the Ocean County Jail, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer for Juarez-Perez, as indicated by jail records.
