Gym at Toms River High School North Named Ray Cervino Gymnasium
According to Toms River Schools, the gym at High School North was formally dedicated to former coach Ray Cervino during a ceremony that was held before a girls basketball game last week.
In October of last year, the illustrious former HSN girls basketball coach passed away. In his two decades of coaching, Cervino has amassed 313 victories, nine South A championships, and the 2000 Group 4 state championship.
Ray's wife Mary, family members including Vicki Henn, Adam, and Nicole Kirk, as well as current and former players, district administrators, board members, and well-wishers from the community attended the poignant ceremony.
Above the gym's entrance, a sign saying "Ray Cervino Gymnasium" with the school's traditional blue and gold color scheme and its emblem anchor was erected.
For photographs, attendees gathered around a cardboard figure of Cervino, who was also the subject of countless entertaining one-liners as he regaled them with tales from his coaching and teaching days.
Following Cervino's passing last fall, former top player Kim Peto remarked, "You wanted to go out on that court and play for him." "You wanted to win for him."
Following the ceremony, High School North's current team played High School South, and they won 56–23 because they also wanted to win for the former coach.
