The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said on Thursday that a Freehold man had been charged with attempted murder. The man is alleged to have shot a Jackson Township man after aiding in the guy's attack when the man was sitting in a car outside a house.
Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer stated that
Michael J. Vulpis, 26, of Freehold, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and being a specific individual not to possess a weapon or ammunition in connection with an assault on June 27.
According to the prosecutor's office, at approximately 12:20 a.m. on June 27, Jackson police were called to a residence on Larsen Road regarding a man, age 27, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the face.
According to investigators, the man was transferred to the
Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he received treatment before being allowed to go.
Authorities said that as the victim and a woman were inside a parked car outside of a house, a blue sedan pulled up and parked in front of the car, obstructing their view. Two males stepped out, came over, and banged on the car window. Following the victim's escape, one of the attackers started hitting him, and one of them—later identified as Vulpis—shot the victim in the face.
After the shooting, the perpetrators left, according to the authorities.
Authorities stated that investigators were able to establish that Vulpis had shot the victim.
While awaiting a detention hearing, Vulpis is being held at the
Ocean County Jail.
The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Jackson Township Police Department, Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Freehold Township Police Department, Freehold Borough Police Department, and the Major Crime and High Tech Crime units of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office collaborated in the investigation.
