Fishing in and Near Toms River
In the summer, anglers can catch stripers during the early hours of the morning by casting small paddletails and swimming plugs near dock lights and out to the Toms River Route 37 Bridge.
In June, July, and August, fluke arrive in the area, while summer flatfish prefer to linger around near the river's mouth rather than in the river itself. Boats may drift away from the mouth entrance into Barnegat Bay with the tide and again want to drift there.
During hot summer days, the area is also ideal for filling a box with blowfish, and it's lights out for
crabbing around the eastern sections of the river.
Squid, whether fresh or frozen, is the bait of choice for anglers worldwide when it comes to fishing for fluke. You might wish to use the whole squid or chop it into strips, depending on your preferences. Sand eels, killifish, fluke belly, and even minnows are additional preferred baits for catching fluke.
There's always a chance that huge ol' bluefish will enter the river system in April through June and mix in with the bass; whether they do so depends on the particular year.
A few years ago, massive gator blues that may weigh up to 18 pounds completely demolished metals, poppers, and plugs in the river.
Huddy Park or the
Island Heights Gazebo are casting locations.
If you have access by boat, you can follow the blues as they run back and forth between the mouth and the Route 37 Bridge, frequently staging there when the tide changes.
