Hugh J. Boyd Jr. Elementary School, located at 1200 Bay Avenue in Seaside Heights, serves children in grades K-6 for a portion of the island.
Members of the Toms River Regional School Board agreed Wednesday night to take part in a feasibility study looking at the idea of sending children from Seaside's Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School to Toms River schools as part of a regionalization effort.
The Boyd school would be closed in this scenario, and Seaside Heights would pay Toms River Regional tuition for borough students attending Toms River schools.
The Seaside Heights Board of Education had already agreed to participate in the feasibility study through a resolution.
It is currently the only school in Seaside Heights.
In July, the state mandated that every municipality in the state that gets transitional funding – which is typically used to keep services running in metropolitan areas with dwindling tax bases — explore combining or eliminating school districts.
The research, which will be undertaken by an outside business, will look at the viability of establishing a sending-receiving connection with the Toms River Regional school district, according to Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony Vaz.
A sending district pays for the education of the children it sends to the receiving district, which is a different relationship than a municipality being absorbed by a larger school district, which would impose its own tax structure.
The feasibility study, according to Vaz, will have no influence on the Boyd school during the present academic year.
Seaside Park's elementary school closed in 2010, thus borough students can go to Toms River Regional or Lavallette Elementary School before continuing on to Central Regional High School.
