Hurricane Erin Intensifies to Category 5, Dangerous Surf Conditions in NJ.
The National Hurricane Center said Saturday night that Hurricane Erin, which is tearing over the Atlantic with sustained winds of 160 mph, has rapidly strengthened to Category 5 status.
At 5 p.m., Hurricane Erin was traveling west at 15 mph and was approximately 135 miles north of Anguilla.
According to the
National Hurricane Center, "the models strongly concur that the system will develop in size over the next several days, even if Erin is a rather compact hurricane right now." “In fact, by the middle of next week, Erin is projected to at least double or treble in size, which will result in rough ocean conditions over the western Atlantic.”
In the next few days, the enormous storm is predicted to shift to the northwest before heading northward away from the East Coast.
The National Hurricane Center stated that there is still a lot of disagreement among the guidelines over how abrupt this turn will be.
Next week, Erin is expected to create potentially fatal surf and rip currents along the Bahamas' beaches and a large portion of the U.S. East Coast, according to the
National Hurricane Center.
