Wednesday morning brought power outages and storm damage for many Jersey Shore residents, as strong gusts and heavy rains that began Tuesday night and continued into the overnight hours blasted over the region.
Over 26,000 customers were impacted by outages statewide as of 9:25 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Jersey Central Power & Light, with 10,341 in Monmouth County and 2,735 in Ocean.
After Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy, George Peterson, a resident of the Mantoloking and Bay Head border, told News 12 New Jersey that this storm ranks third in severity.
The National Weather Service said that Monmouth and Ocean counties saw two to three inches of rain throughout the storm, with the highest totals concentrated along the coast. With wind gusts reaching 57 mph in Sea Girt, Monmouth, at 10:20 p.m., and 72 mph in Island Beach State Park, Ocean, at 9:39 p.m., both counties met the threshold for a strong wind warning.
While a lot of community events and school-related activities were canceled or postponed on Tuesday night, most schools opened on Wednesday morning without any problems.
For the Jersey Shore, a National Weather Service advisory remained in effect until Wednesday morning. High gusts of up to 65 mph and heavy rains that could result in coastal flooding were predicted by the alert.
Power Outages are Still Being Reported.
