Important Announcement: Brick Reservoir Walking Path Closing Date

The Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority has stated that starting on August 18, access to the well-liked walking trail surrounding the Brick Reservoir will be closed.

Although the access shutdown was announced by the Brick MUA in June, a precise date was not provided until recently. Prior to the repair, the reservoir's water level has been decreased.
According to the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank, which is providing funding for the project, the closure is necessary for reservoir enhancements that will boost its usable capacity and lessen the consequences of erosion.

The reservoir's upper slopes will be strengthened to prevent erosion when water levels drop.

"Currently, erosion limits the reservoir's usable storage to just the top 5 feet (between elevations 95 and 100 feet above sea level)," said the description.
When the MUA is unable to draw water from the river, the infrastructure construction will stabilize an extra 15 feet of the slopes (down to elevation 80), boosting the reservoir's capacity.

According to the infrastructure bank statement, "the work involves removing the existing sand layer over the liner and adding a protective layer of geotextile fabric, gravel, and stone." "By strengthening the reservoir's banks, this project enhances climate resilience, safeguards drinking water supply, and ensures the long-term reliability of this critical infrastructure."
"Public access to the reservoir and the nearby recreational areas will not be permitted during this time for safety concerns. As we finish this crucial task, we appreciate your cooperation and patience and acknowledge that this may cause some difficulty," officials stated.

According to MUA authorities, the closure is anticipated to last roughly ten months.

In December, a $7.967 million contract for repairs at the reservoir was approved by the Brick MUA. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved $3,768,154 of the project, and $2,826,104 of that amount is being funded, according to the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank statement.
According to the NJIB, the NJ Resiliency Bank is contributing $1,040,000, which includes an extra 10% of the costs and the $942,000 that separates the FEMA-approved portion of the project from the FEMA financing.

"Any additional costs beyond the FEMA-covered amount were financed through the NJ Water Bank," stated the NJIB.

Updates, including the expected reopening, will be provided on MUA's website, according to officials.
