Important Safety Notice: Don’t Approach Downed Drones in NJ
Firefighters are instructed by an intelligence bulletin to report any drones they see on the ground to the FBI and local law enforcement.
Some drones have reportedly crashed as hundreds of them continue to fly over New Jersey. All of those reports have since been disproved, and no drones have been discovered on the ground.
New Jersey firefighters are probably going to be among the first on the scene if one does crash or land.
New Jersey fire agencies have received instructions from state officials to handle these situations cautiously.
In a bulletin acquired by NJ101.5, the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety has now cautioned firemen against approaching any drones that are grounded.
Bold lettering on the bulletin warn that "downed or landed drones should not be approached.
Additionally, firefighters are told to get in touch with the FBI and the bomb squad.
The Fire Threat Task Force intelligence bulletin directs firefighters to report any drones they come across that have crashed or landed to the FBI and local law enforcement.
They must call the closest bomb squad and request Haz-Mat personnel from the state and municipal governments.
"This is a law enforcement incident, extinguish any fire and secure the perimeter," the notice states. "Be mindful that there is a chance that nearby electrical equipment and two-way radio systems could malfunction.
It is also recommended that firefighters use full personal protective equipment.
According to the
Division of Fire Safety, these recommendations were created in cooperation with the Newark office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Jersey State Police.
It is illegal to shoot down a drone without permission from the federal government, and state and municipal authorities cannot impede any drone activities.
The Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Homeland Security are also participating with the investigation, which is being led by the FBI.
