In Memoriam: John Chyko, Esteemed Teacher at Toms River Elementary School
For 38 years, John M. Chyko was an elementary school teacher in the Toms River school district. He also assisted in starting a basketball league for elementary schools in the district.
As they grieve his departure, the family of a former elementary school teacher in Toms River is remembering him for his love of the great outdoors and his love for them.
According to his relatives,
John Michael Chyko, a former teacher at
Washington Street Elementary School, passed away in Maryland on March 14, 2024. He was eighty-two.
A 1997 story in the Asbury Park Press stated that he was involved in the establishment of a basketball league for elementary schools in the district, which was successful for almost thirty years.
According to his obituary on the website of Allen Funeral Home, Chyko was born on April 1, 1941, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. He attended Bloomsburg University, graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1959, and later in life obtained a master's degree in environmental education. In addition, he attended Bloomsburg's St. Columba Catholic Church.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren. John was a St. Louis Cardinals mega fan; he enjoyed hunting with family and friends and staying at the hunting cabin that he and his dad built. He also enjoyed attending high school reunions; surf fishing in Island Beach State Park; growing tomatoes and solving word search puzzles.
After 38 years of service as a teacher in the Toms River Regional School District, Chyko retired in 1998.
He married his wife of 52 years, the former Leslie Rauh, on Nov. 20, 1971. They lived in Toms River until moving to Lutherville, Maryland, 5.5 years ago.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Leslie; his daughter, Magan Chyko Leigh and spouse Angela Euculano Leigh of Lutherville; two grandchildren; Calvin Leigh and Sadie Leigh; four siblings, James S. Chyko and spouse Diane of Bloomsburg; Charles Chyko and spouse Lana of Bloomsburg; Christine Haldeman and spouse Michael of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and Barbara Tosi and spouse Charles of Westerville, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.
