Free COVID-19 Tests — or Get Reimbursements from Private Insurance
Under the new Biden administration rule, families of four in New Jersey will be eligible for over three dozen free testing every month.
Under a new Biden administration rule requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of tests, millions of people in New Jersey may soon have access to free COVID-19 testing at home.
Starting Jan. 15, those with private insurance in New Jersey will have free access to over-the-counter, at-home COVID-19 tests. Tests can be ordered online or at a pharmacy or store, and they will be paid either upfront or through reimbursement by a health plan.
According to the Secretary of Health & Human Services, Xabier Becerra stated that they are requiring insurers and group health plans to make tests free for millions of Americans. This is all part of our overall strategy to ramp up access to easy to use, at-home tests at no cost.
Insurance companies and health plans will be forced to cover eight free at-home tests per covered person each month under the new rule. The tests, which must be permitted, cleared, or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, do not require a doctor's letter.
This means that a family of four on the same insurance plan would be eligible for up to 32 free tests per month; however, if prescribed or performed by a health care provider, there is no limit to the number of tests covered.
The Biden Administration also stated that it is "incentivizing" insurers and group health plans to create programs that allow residents of New Jersey to obtain over-the-counter diagnostics directly from preferred pharmacies, shops, or other businesses at no cost to them.
In New Jersey, are you looking for an at-home test? They're available at CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, ShopRite, Acme, Walmart, and Target, and demand has been strong. To ensure that a test is in stock, check with individual retailers or search online.
You can still get free tests in New Jersey if you don't have private insurance or coverage through a group plan. The state maintains a website where you may acquire at-home tests and learn about free public testing. In collaboration with the Department of Health, Vault Medical Services is already providing free tests to New Jersey citizens.
