Jersey Shore Beach Closed for the Summer Due To Bacteria

According to the Borough of Beachwood, for the safety, health and welfare of the residents and others, the Mayor and Council of Beachwood, NJ have decided to close swimming at the beach for the remainder of the 2024 season due to the Ocean County Health Department reporting of excessive bacteria levels found in the water. You may still sit and take in the lovely view of the scenery but no one will be permitted to swim.

According to the statement, for those who purchased beach badges, notice will be provided for refunds shortly.

For a number of years, the water quality along the Toms River's Beachwood beach has been problematic due to recurrent episodes of elevated Enterococci bacterial levels. 104 microorganisms per 100 milliliters of water sampled is the benchmark.

Swimming prohibitions and advisories are issued for water samples above 104 colonies, and retesting is required if the excess is still present.

According to data from the state Department of Environmental Protection, readings this summer have gone as high as 1,160 colonies, which was reported at the Beachwood Beach East station on Wednesday.

According to the NJDEP, in addition to the high readings on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Beachwood's beach had high readings of germs during the weeks of June 24, July 1, and July 8.
