Jersey Shore Beach Tragedy: Swimmer Drowns, Four Rescued

According to Ocean County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, four people were rescued and one person perished Monday night after becoming entangled in rip currents in Seaside Heights.

Detective Steve Korman of the Seaside Heights Police Department reported that the seven were swimming at the beach on Webster Avenue at approximately 7 p.m. on Monday.

Five people were found in the water by the responding police, and all five were taken ashore, according to Korman.

One swimmer was discovered submerged by the Seaside Heights Fire Company's ocean rescue squad, according to Tim Farrell, assistant fire chief of Seaside Heights Fire Company Station 44, as reported by NJ.com.

After being transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, the 31-year-old Trenton resident was declared deceased, according to Korman. According to officials, his identity was being kept secret until his family was notified.

According to Korman, three additional swimmers in the group were also transported to the hospital for medical attention.

Lifeguards usually leave Seaside Heights and the majority of Jersey Shore beaches at 5 p.m.

For a number of days, beaches around the Jersey Shore have been marked with red flags alerting people to the high risk of rip currents. Even for really skilled swimmers, the risks are substantial, thus the Ocean County Sheriff's Office has regularly issued warnings to remain out of the water.

Over the weekend, 12 people were saved from unsecured beaches by rip currents.
