New Jersey Braces for Intense Storm with Strong Winds and Rain
New Jersey could experience periods of intense rain and severe wind gusts from Thursday night into Friday morning due to a powerful storm system, with the worst conditions anticipated during the morning commute.
From 1 a.m. on Friday until 1 a.m. on Saturday, all 21 counties are under a
wind advisory, with gusts of up to 45 mph predicted in many places.
The gusts could be powerful enough to topple trees and electricity lines, resulting in sporadic power outages, according to forecasters.
The
National Weather Service predicts that after midnight on Thursday, the Garden State will likely experience heavy rain with the possibility of embedded thunderstorms.
The Interstate 95 corridor is expected to have the most intense rainfall between 5 and 9 a.m. on Friday, which is expected to slow down morning traffic.
According to the
weather service, most places will receive a significant amount of rain—between three-quarters of an inch and one inch or 1.25 inches—but the effects of floods should mostly be restricted to metropolitan areas and those with inadequate drainage.
A narrow or broken line of heavy rain may develop along a cold front between seven in the morning, according to forecasters. and 10 a.m., which can result in some harmful wind gusts.
The most obvious effect of this storm system will be winds.
After midnight on Thursday, southerly winds will pick up speed. Ahead of the front, steady winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts of up to 45 mph are expected.
West-northwest winds will pick up again after the storm passes late Friday morning, with gusts typically between 35 and 45 mph, though they might reach 50 mph.
On Saturday, high pressure is expected to develop, bringing with it dry weather and waning breezes. On Saturday, the temperature will be somewhat below average.
