New Jersey Faces Severe Weather as Storm Intensifies Across State
The most recent forecast calls for wind gusts of up to 60 mph on Friday as a storm pummels New Jersey, perhaps bringing down trees and power lines.
With sporadic gusts of up to 60 mph, the heaviest winds are predicted from 10 a.m. to early afternoon. According to
National Weather Service forecasters, a line of storms passes through at that time, placing the state at a moderate risk of severe weather.
Northern Ocean, southeast Hunterdon, northwest Camden, Mercer, northeastern Gloucester, northern Burlington, southern Somerset, Monmouth, and Middlesex counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10:30 a.m.
Residents are urged by forecasters to visit an inside room on a building's lowest floor.
"This severe thunderstorm may contain little or no lightning," the meteorologists warned. "Do not wait until you hear thunder before taking cover."
All of New Jersey is under a wind advisory through Saturday at one in the morning.
According to the
National Weather Service, winds are predicted to blow between 35 and 45 mph in the morning, with sporadic gusts of up to 50 mph. In the afternoon, westerly winds will arrive with more widespread gusts of between 40 and 50 mph.
"These winds could result in some downed trees and scattered power outages...especially given the wet conditions softening up the soil," forecasters from the National Weather Service said.
As that line of storms moves offshore on Friday afternoon, the serious threat will end.
According to experts, Friday morning temperatures are likewise in the 50s and 60s, but they will rapidly drop this evening due to a cold front. Overnight lows will reach the 20s.
