Search Continues for Derek Narby of Brick
The search for a man from Brick Township who vanished after his family's boat capsized in Manasquan Inlet was resumed by authorities on Tuesday.
Sgt. Philip Curry of the
New Jersey State Police said that while the investigation into the incident is ongoing, video taken by a surf camera clearly shows the moment the boat was overturned by a huge wave just outside the inlet.
The search for Derek Narby, 21, who was allegedly in the boat's cabin when it was slammed by a wave Thursday evening is being conducted by authorities using side-scan sonar, Curry said.
The 1987 31-foot Aquasport capsized and disintegrated. According to Curry, the boat's stern was discovered in 30 feet of water off the north jetty of Manasquan Inlet, and bits of it washed up on the coast at Seaside Heights.
Curry was unsure of the size of the components discovered in Seaside Heights.
The boat is seen heading toward the entrance and slowing down as it approaches the inlet mouth in the two-minute video clip that was shared to Facebook from the Manasquan side of the inlet. The boat turns on a spotlight in what appears to be an effort to better locate the jetty as waves can be seen breaking across the top of the jetty. A big wave breaks behind the boat as the spotlight illuminates the jetty, then the boat flips over and the light goes out.
The search has been complicated by the sea conditions following Hurricane Lee, since it was too dangerous for divers to anchor and attempt to swim. Narby's father and brother were recovered from the inlet on Thursday night.
