Ocean County Boardwalk Incident: Driver Charged With DUI
A driver involved in a crash on the boardwalk in Island Heights early Sunday morning has been charged with driving under the influence, according to police reports.
Asa Williams, 42, was taken into custody after the incident, which occurred around 1:10 a.m. on Sunday, as stated by the Island Heights police. Williams was operating a 2017 Nissan Altima when he reportedly lost control near the intersection of River Avenue and West End Avenue.
According to police and images from the
Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company, officers Bryan Monachello and Jake Piantanida discovered the Nissan on the boardwalk, smoking and damaged, along with downed power lines and a downed street light.
According to authorities, there was also significant damage to a portion of the boardwalk.
The Island Heights Department of Public Works and Island Heights First Aid also responded.
Due to safety concerns, the damaged section of the boardwalk has been marked off with cones and caution tape. Officials advise people to avoid this area until it can be repaired.
