Ocean County Hotel Crisis Successfully Resolved by Police
Authorities reported that after local and county law enforcement worked for hours to safely handle a behavioral health issue, a tense New Year's Day event at a Route 88 hotel ended without any injuries.
On January 1, at approximately 9:18 a.m., police were summoned to the
Rodeway Inn due to a complaint of a person experiencing a mental health emergency within a room. The person was irate and carrying a knife when Point Pleasant Police Department officers came to support the Ocean County PESS Unit, according to the police.
Officers isolated the person inside the room and secured the area to safeguard the public. The Ocean County Sheriff's Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Regional SWAT Team, and county crisis negotiators responded to the call for additional resources as a precaution.
Following a protracted negotiation process, the person was apprehended without causing harm to the police, the public, or themselves, according to authorities. The individual was taken to a hospital for assessment. Charges are pending.
