Ocean County Tragedy: Child and Woman Killed

According to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, a Toms River woman has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with a Jackson crash that claimed the lives of two individuals, including a child riding in her car.

On May 30, Sorah S. Tyner, 37, was in the oncoming line of traffic and using her mobile phone when the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica collided with Carolina Bonilla-Hernandez, 36, of Jackson Township, driving a 2010 GMC Terrain, according to information released by prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer on Friday.

About five o'clock on May 30, Tyner was traveling west on East Veterans Highway when she attempted to negotiate a bend and entered the eastbound lane, striking the GMC, according to Billhimer.

After being brought to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, Bonilla-Hernandez passed away from her wounds, according to the prosecutor's office.

Tyner was driven to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with two children in her car for treatment; the prosecutor's office stated that one of the kids was declared dead when they arrived.

According to the prosecutor's office, the second child is still in the hospital and is stable. Authorities added that after receiving medical attention for her wounds, Tyner was released.

According to Billhimer, investigators found that Tyner failed to take appropriate steps to prevent the collision and that her car was in the oncoming lane for a considerable amount of time before it collided.

It was also discovered during the investigation that just one of the children was buckled up in the proper child car seat. The prosecutor's office stated that the deceased youngster was simply wearing a seatbelt, despite the fact that a child car seat would have been a better fit for him given his age and weight.

Tyner was being held in the Ocean County Jail until a detention hearing, according to the prosecutor's office. Tyner has been charged with two charges of vehicular homicide, manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child, assault by auto, impeding and obstruction.

Tyner's cell phone was found to be in use at the time of the crash, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office High Tech Crime Unit, which conducted a forensic extraction of the device after detectives executed a court-authorized search warrant for it. Tyner gave contradictory statements at the crash scene, according to detectives, they claimed.

The charges referenced above are merely accusations and the press and public are reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. R.P.C. 3.6(b)(6).
