Police Vehicle Strikes Woman on Jersey Shore Beach

According to 6abc.com, a woman is hospitalized after she was struck by a police vehicle that was driving on the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey, according to witnesses.

The woman was lying on the beach when she was hit.

People on the beach at Rio Grande Ave in Wildwood on Wednesday heard the commotion around 3:30 p.m.

"Everybody was gathering around screaming, yelling at the person in the truck, 'Stop! There's somebody under your truck! You hit somebody!'" said Rose Simone of Chalfont, Pa.

Emergency responders were called to the beach for a report of a person struck by a vehicle.

Police have not disclosed any information regarding the circumstances leading up to this occurrence or the identity of the driver.

Videos and pictures from the site show people congregating around a white pickup truck that is marked "Wildwood Police." It looks like they are attempting to assist someone who is underneath the truck.

The woman heard saying in Simone's video, "There's someone under there,"

"A bunch of guys came around that were in the area and they said we have to lift the truck, the front of the truck to get her out," Simone recalled.

"Please come on over. One of the men in the video added, "We're going to try to lift it up," pointing to the vehicle.

"It was obviously an accident. However, Simone remarked, "it was probably one that could have been avoided."

The woman was taken away on a stretcher after EMS and other assistance arrived.

According to the victim's partner, she sustained lung damage, three damaged vertebrae, and numerous broken ribs.

It is anticipated that she will live.

The investigation is still ongoing, according to Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano, who described the situation as "unfortunate" on Thursday.
