Potential Storm System Triggers Alert for East Coast:
What Does This Mean for New Jersey?
The East Coast is "on alert" for a possible tropical rainfall that could result in beach erosion and coastal flooding along the Jersey Shore, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.
"On Friday or over the weekend, a tropical wind and rainstorm is predicted to develop over the Gulf Stream off the southeast coast. The rainfall may be able to intensify even further due to the extra heat and energy from the warm ocean current, according to
AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva.
Forecasters warned of heavy rip currents along the shore and rough waves as the storm moves north into the first part of next week.
AccuWeather meteorologists are worried about extended coastal flooding and beach erosion due to the tropical wind and rainstorm's anticipated slow motion. Forecasters stated that these effects are likely regardless of whether this feature develops into a tropical storm.
The precise date and path of the storm are unknown to forecasters. The storm's proximity to New Jersey beaches will depend on the timing and intensity of other local weather phenomena.
The tropical wind and downpour are more likely to be guided near the mid-Atlantic by a powerful, slow-moving high pressure system in the North Atlantic, whereas they are more likely to be directed farther from the coast by a high pressure system that moves more quickly.
