Reported Shark Sighting Near Jersey Coast

Fishermen may have encountered Jaws personally after venturing miles out into the ocean.

According to Pearson's Pursuit Inshore Fishing, they traveled out to Sea Isle Ridge on July 14 in search of "some bonito or mackerel action." Sea Isle Ridge is located at 22 miles off Atlantic City and 15 miles off Townsend's Inlet.

That was not successful. Fishermen, on the other hand, reported seeing "the biggest shark of my life."

The fisherman reported it was about fifteen feet. Images posted to their Facebook page appear to show the dorsal fin of a shark sticking out of the water in a way reminiscent of "Jaws."

They took a picture of a big shark while searching for different species to bite. They estimated its length to be roughly fifteen feet and believed it to be a great white shark. There was also speculation that it might be a harmless basking shark, which resembles a whale shark and has a maximum length of 26 feet.

Whether it was a great white shark or something else is unclear. The white shark tracking organization OCEARCH has not received any reports of shark sightings close to the Jersey shore in a long time.

A huge number of great white sharks are lurking off the coasts of New York, New Jersey, and Cape Cod, trackers of the creatures have said. A map on Ocearch's website allows members of the public to track the sharks for themselves, with each fish having its own name and fact file. TRACK NOW
