According to a Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center, a second basking shark sighting happened just off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey! This shark was estimated to be 15-20ft in length cruising along at the surface about 5 miles offshore.

On August 1, they posted a video of a basking shark near Cape May. The shark is the second largest species of shark that is still alive.

According to Cape May Whale Watch, a week earlier, a second basking shark of almost the same length was seen along Wildwood's coast. The dorsal fin notches on these two sharks did not match, according to the report.

Oceana International claims that basking sharks are "quite harmless," despite their frightening size. These enormous animals filter feed and consume microscopic planktons despite reaching a maximum length of 45 feet and a weight of 10,000 pounds.

Even though basking sharks have vast home ranges, Cape May Whale Watch reports that seeing one off the Jersey Shore is a "rare sighting."
