According to 101.5, a South Toms River borough official has been accused of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
The Ocean County Corrections website states that William Gleason, 68, was taken into custody on Saturday.
Following his arrest by South Toms River Police on Saturday, William Gleason made his first court appearance on Monday. At the very least until his detention hearing later this week, the state requested that Gleason stay incarcerated.
Gleason is charged with four charges of sexual assault in all, including two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and aggravated sexual assault with a victim under the age of thirteen and between the ages of thirteen and sixteen.
The accused victim has been the subject of these charges for a considerable amount of time, according to South Toms River Police. Gleason will be "immediately removed from all appointed positions," including the recreation commission, according to borough attorney Chris Dasti.
In addition, Gleason is the leader of the
South Toms River Optimist Club, which emphasizes community service initiatives that help young people and the environment, as per their website.
During the first appearance on Monday, the judge scheduled this coming Thursday for the detention hearing. The prosecutor's office declined to speak further, citing the traditional reasons of the age of the accused victim and the nature of the case.
