At Toms River High School South, Lynne Szablewski has been instructing kids in math for more than 20 years.
After receiving a Stage IV breast cancer diagnosis in late August that has spread to her lungs, the Beachwood woman is now dealing with a far more challenging math problem and has been forced to take medical leave.
"This has come as a complete shock to her and her family as it was discovered during her first-ever mammogram," her brother Rob Szablewski stated in a GoFundMe page he started to support his sister and her family.
According to Rob, Lynne Szablewski and Steve Morey put a lot of effort into supporting their family of eight children, six boys and two girls ranging in age from 27 to 13.
Lynne has worked as the manager of the Roy Rogers restaurant in Pine Beach for more than 25 years in addition to teaching. Along with working numerous jobs and taking care of their kids, Steve also finds time to help for the Beachwood Soccer Club, according to Rob.
Due to the fact that Lynne has used up all of her sick days, she will have to pay for her medical insurance "and eventually for COBRA coverage out of pocket." Her brother commented that she had lost a large amount of income. Making hand-tied blankets is one way Lynne tries to boost her income, partly out of boredom, according to a post she made on
Facebook.
"This is going to be a lifelong fight and she will need our support even though I know she would never ask for help."
