Shark Attack at the Jersey Shore
According to Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company #1, emergency personnel in Stone Harbor reacted to a 911 call on Sunday, May 21st, at around 3:00 pm, reporting a surfer who had suffered injuries from a probable shark attack while surfing in the ocean off the 109th Street beach. The Fire and Rescue Squads and the Stone Harbor Police Department all showed up right away to offer help.
The injured surfer, a 15-year-old girl from Pennylvania, received immediate on-site medical care from Stone Harbor Fire/Rescue after suffering multiple lacerations to her left foot and calf.
The teen was then sent to
Cape Regional Medical Center for additional assessment and treatment, where she received 6 sutures. Fortunately, it was determined that the injuries weren't life-threatening.
In an ongoing effort to pinpoint the precise source of the surfer's injuries, the Stone Harbor Police Department has been actively engaging with regional marine life specialists and professionals.
The New Jersey State Southern Regional Medical Examiner's Office has determined after careful analysis that the injuries experienced by the surfer are consistent with those normally linked to a shark of unknown size and kind.
At this time, no restrictions on beach activities are planned. However, the Borough of Stone Harbor urges all beachgoers to exercise caution and adhere to any safety guidelines issued by local authorities. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with water activities in areas where marine life thrives. According to the International Shark Attack File Beach Injuries and Fatalities Report, the odds of a shark attack in the United States are 1 in 11.5 million. However low the risk, The Borough encourages all visitors to remain vigilant.
