Thousands Affected by Power Outages During Severe Winter Weather in NJ

In the wake of our most recent winter storm, strong winds caused tens of thousands of New Jersey homes and businesses to lose power on Sunday and Monday.

As of 6 p.m. Sunday, over 30,000 utility customers in the Garden State were without power, according to Power Outage Tracker, which tracks outage statistics from the state's four major utility companies.
Shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, some 11,000 customers were still without power after power lines were destroyed by overnight winds that reached speeds of up to 70 mph.

The southern portion of the state, extending from Burlington and Camden counties to Cape May, saw the largest concentrations of outages on Sunday night.

With a powerful cold front moving across New Jersey, weather forecasters predicted that winds reached occasionally reach 50 to 60 mph on Sunday and Monday.
The National Weather Service warned that the high winds and wet soils could cause significant tree damage. With temperatures in the 20s and 30s and wind chills in the teens, the strong winds will bring in much colder air. The effects of this high wind event could be worsened by the possibility of power outages and the cold.
