Toms River Bank Robbery Suspect Apprehended

Daniel McCarthy

Police units were called to the First Financial Bank on Route 9 on Tuesday at 2:00 PM in response to an alleged attempted bank robbery. The initial inquiry found a Caucasian middle-aged man produced a note requesting money but fled on foot before getting any cash. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses, dark slacks, and a surgical mask.

As police were looking into the incident, a second complaint came in from the Santander Bank on Route 9 slightly to the north of the first one, alleging a robbery where a man matching the description handed the teller a note before fleeing the building on foot with an undetermined sum of money.

A collaborative investigation with the East Brunswick Police Department and Berkeley Township Police Departments was launched after Toms River Detectives, on Tuesday, uncovered a lead regarding the minivan used in the crimes. Daniel McCarthy, a 68-year-old suspect, and his car were discovered at a motel in East Brunswick.

Detectives monitored him and then quickly brought him into jail. McCarthy has lived in Jackson and East Brunswick in the past. He was accused of one second-degree robbery and one second-degree attempted robbery by Toms River Detectives. The agencies concerned are still looking at more charges. In anticipation of a future bond hearing, McCarthy will be detained at the Ocean County Jail.

The Ocean County Sheriffs Department Crime Scene Unit assisted in processing the scene. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact the Toms River Police Department Detective Bureau at tips@trpolice.org.
