Toms River Implements Curfew to Address Teen Behavior on Barrier Island
5/24/25- On Friday, the Toms River Police Department posted an announcement on its Facebook page announcing the return of what has become an annual curfew. It covers both Ortley Beach and the North Beach portion of the Toms River, which is located between Brick and Lavallette, and runs from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Unless they are going home from work, or with a parent or guardian, all teenagers aged 17 and under must be off the streets by 10 p.m. Medical crises, teenagers traveling to and from productive jobs, religious or educational events, and private gatherings are among the exceptions, according to officials.
The curfew was implemented by Toms River police in 2021 after they started establishing it in 2020. It was brought back in 2022 following a wild July 4th weekend that saw 195 calls to that area of the township, 24 of which were specifically regarding rowdy children on the barrier island.
Among them was a fight at Barnacle Bill's Amusements that left two officers hurt. That weekend, two teenagers were taken into custody, including a Millburn girl, 16, who attempted to hit a police officer while intoxicated, according to the police.
Kids under the age of eighteen are also subject to curfews in nearby Lavallette and Seaside Heights, which also run from 10 p.m. to 5 p.m.
