Sebastian Rivera Wins Olympic Bronze Medal

Sebastian Rivera, a native of Toms River, has had a fantastic journey to follow.

From the underweight freshman at Christian Brothers Academy, who went 3–8 while wrestling at 106 pounds, to what he accomplished in a dramatic way on Sunday morning in Paris, he has come a long way.

With a thrilling 10-9 victory over Tulga Tumur Ochir of Mongolia in one of the two bronze medal bouts at 65 kg (143 pounds) on Sunday morning, the former standout wrestler for Rutgers University, Northwestern University, and the CBA became the first wrestler from the Shore Conference, the first wrestler from Rutgers, and only the eighth wrestler from New Jersey to earn a medal in the Olympic Game.

Coaches Jeff Buxton and Donny Pritzlaff challenged Rivera, who wrestles for Puerto Rico, and Rivera won with a last-second takedown.

While Rivera had intended to contest Ochir's four-point move earlier in the second and final quarter, Buxton, the former head coach of Blair Academy, and Pritzlaff, the current head coach of Columbia University and former associate head coach of Rutgers, prudently withheld their challenge until the very end.

When it was evident on playback that Ochir's knees had touched the mat following his four-point move, Buxton and Pritzlaff would not have had the opportunity to appeal.
