After having to pick up her child early from school, a woman from Toms River yelled threats at the staff of Toms River High School North, leading to her being charged with terroristic threats, according to police on Tuesday.

According to Toms River Police Chief Peter Sundack, the 47-year-old mother was upset with what she was told and became hostile and irate when she came to pick up the student.

He confirmed that in order to protect the student's identity, the mother was not named and the reason she was asked to pick up her child was not revealed.

As she and the student left the school, the mother began shouting threatening remarks in front of the students and staff, according to Sundack.

Because of the threats, administrators at Toms River North put a shelter in place while police looked for the mother, he said.

Later, she was apprehended after being discovered in Jackson Township. According to Sundack, she has been charged with second-degree counts of terroristic threats and false public alarm.
According to him, the shelter that had been in place after her arrest was lifted, and students went back to their regular schedules and dismissals.

In order to keep the students safe, Sundack said he wanted to "thank the responding police officers and the school administration/staff."

Shortly after 1 p.m., the district sent out a notice via the Parent Square portal informing staff, students, and families that the shelter-in-place was mandated "as a precautionary action in response to an external matter."

The message stated that "as an additional safety measure at this time, Toms River Police are dealing with this external matter accordingly, and have provided an extra police presence on and around school grounds." "Every staff member and student is safe and going about their regular business."

The woman was later located and arrested in Jackson Township, and charges are pending.
