A New Resident of Toms River
According to Toms River Police Department, Saker, who is on duty from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., was on patrol when he received a report about a young mother who was having her second kid at home in the early morning hours. This child had chosen to arrive a few days early.
When Saker arrived, contractions were happening around two minutes apart, and the mother told him she could feel the baby's head approaching. "The mother was standing up in the bathroom and she told me her water broke," Saker said.
Within a few minutes, the baby was born, according to Saker, who assisted the woman in lying down in the bathroom on blankets and towels that he had her husband retrieve.
"It was less than five minutes from the time I arrived that the baby was in my hands," Saker stated.
However, there was a problem: the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.
"I was able to get the cord off and get some air in her," Saker stated. "It wasn’t too long, maybe 10 seconds, but it felt like forever."
Mia was delivered at 2:12 a.m. and was officially 7 pounds, 1 ounces in weight, according to Saker.
Saker had the opportunity to visit the family on October 18 and give Mia and her sister Lilly T-shirts in honor of the police officer-assisted delivery.
It's something Saker stated he won't forget.
"It’s kind of an awesome feeling that you did that," remarked the man.
