According to Toms River Schools, a student from the district has been placed in the renowned National Merit Scholarship competition as a semifinalist.

Less than 1 percent of the country's high school seniors, or over 16,000 semifinalists, have been recognized by the nationwide program.

Michael J. Pavao from Toms River High School East is one of the semifinalists.

By taking the 2023 PSAT as juniors, more over 1.3 million students from 21,000 high schools were enrolled in the program.

According to organizers, about 15,000 of the 16,000 semifinalists will be named finalists.

Semifinalists and a high school representative must fill out a scholarship application with information about their academic history, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership qualities shown, employment history, and honors and awards they have achieved in order to be considered as finalist candidates.
