Tornado Touches Down in New Jersey
The National Weather Service reported that an EF-0 landspout tornado made landfall in Mercer County on Friday night.
The NWS stated that the verified twister formed in Lawrence Township at roughly 6 p.m. in a report that was made public on Saturday. According to forecasters, it started close to the crossroads of Johnson Road and Brunswick Avenue, uprooting and damaging a number of trees.
The NWS report said the twister packed 80 mph winds and left a path that was 0.13 miles long.
According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, forecasters identified the twister as a landspout, which is a smaller, weaker tornado that usually arises without a supercell or rotating updraft and has a short, rope-like condensation funnel.
Waterspouts are similar to landspouts, except they occur over water. The strength of these types of tornadoes tends to be EF-2 or less.
Friday's tornado spawned as severe thunderstorms lashed New Jersey with heavy rains and strong winds. More than 40,000 homes and businesses lost power as storms moved across the state.
